Anders als bei seinen anderen Büchern bezieht sich MacGregor hier nicht primär auf die Sammlung im British Museum, sondern zeigt (neben Exponaten) auch viele Bilder von Originalplätzen- vermutlich bei einem Thema wie "Religion" auch ganz angemessen. Der grundsätzliche Aufbau des Buches ist dabei aber wie bei seinen anderen Büchern: In jedem Kapitel beschäftigt er sich mit einem Aspekt - etwa "Festen" oder "Religion als Legitimiation für Herrschaft" und befasst sich dann- wieder anhand vpn zwei Beispielen- intensiv mit dem Teilaspekt. Das ist zum Teil wieder enrom interessant, so erfährt man hier viel genauer als sonstwo die Geschichte der Weihnachtstraditionen oder auch Dinge wie die Zoroastrier oder die Rastafarie-Bewegung oder Christenverfolgung in Japan im Spätmittelalter... Da MacGregor gut schreibt und die Aspekte wirklich tiefgreifend dargestellt sind, ist Living with Gods auf jeden Fall ein gutes Buch, auch zum stöbern. Ganz bewusst beschränkt sich MacHregor nicht auf die Weltreligionen, auch wenn gerade Christentum, Islam, Judentum und Hinduismus schon eine größere Rolle spielen (schon weil darüber mehr bekannt ist)Allerdings sind die Kapitel doch eher lose verbunden. Die Überthemen bleiben sehr exemplarisch und ich frage mich pb eine historischere Ausrichgung nicht günstiger gewesen wäre. Das die Kapitel in der Qualität schwanken ist schon fast zu erwarten, auch wenn das Niveau eher hoch ist. Insgesamt bewerte ich das Buch daher etwas unterhalb von 100 Objects (immer noch eines meiner Lieblingsbücher) und dem Deutschlandbuch, aber oberhalb vom Shakespearebuch (schon allein vom Umfang her).
